About The Stars and Stripes National Museum and Library
The Stars and Stripes National Museum and Library documents, collects, preserves and exhibits
materials related to the history, work, contents, scope and role of the Stars and Stripes military
newspaper, founded in 1861 by troops under the command of then-Brigadier General Ulysses S.
Grant. It continues to serve our service members today. The Museum and Library seeks to enhance
the understanding and appreciation of the Stars and Stripes’ important role in history by preserving,
interpreting, and making its archives available to those who are interested in using its resources for
research purposes.
About the role
The Executive Assistant will serve as the Museum’s primary public relations executive and is
responsible for producing a monthly web-based newsletter and occasional slide presentations while
maintaining the Museum website and social media accounts. Fiscal management and maintaining
financial records also are essential, and the individual chosen will have primary responsibility for
financial affairs while consulting with and reporting to the Executive Director.
Responsibilities
● Serve as the chief assistant to the Museum Executive Director.
● Maintain and update the Museum website to highlight recent and upcoming events.
● Promote Museum events and successes through various platforms.
● Serve as primary liaison to external media producing articles and videos about the Museum.
● Produce occasional slide presentations for events or for use within the exhibit areas.
● Pay bills, maintain financial records and produce financial reports.
● Serve as backup to the Executive Director, making presentations, leading tours and attending
meetings when the ED is not available.
● Other duties as assigned.
Location & commitments
● The Museum is located in Bloomfield, Missouri, where S&S was founded in 1861. Bloomfield
is a 2.5-hour drive from Memphis and St. Louis and is about 45 minutes southwest of Cape
Girardeau.
● The position is a full-time, 40-hours-a-week job with two weeks of paid vacation annually.
● Occasional travel and evening/weekend work will be necessary, and compensatory time or
overtime pay will be awarded at the Executive Director’s discretion and with board approval.
● The candidate would be joining a small team at an organization with ambitions to grow, so a
willingness to pitch in and assist colleagues is essential for this role.
Candidate requirements
● The ideal candidate will be personable, an organized self-starter, at least moderately
tech-savvy and enjoy interacting with museum visitors.
● A bachelor’s degree in history, strategic communication, journalism or finance is preferred.
● A passion for military history and the First Amendment is a plus

Primary duties involve producing a monthly web-based newsletter and occasional slide presentations, along with maintaining the museum website and social media accounts. Fiscal management and maintaining financial records are also expected.
The ideal candidate will be an organized self-starter, at least moderately tech-savvy and enjoy interacting with museum visitors. He or she also should be willing and able to pinch-hit for the executive director at public outreach and fundraising events. A passion for military history and the First Amendment is a plus.
The Stars and Stripes Museum and Library collects, documents, celebrates, interprets, and preserves material related to the creation and continuing history of The Stars and Stripes, a newspaper and website that continues to serve our nation’s servicemen and women around the world.
Located in the town where the first edition of the paper rolled off the presses in 1861, the facility houses exhibits about the history of The Stars and Stripes and the conflicts it covered, as well as a library focused on the history of the newspaper and American conflicts. It is strongly supported by the Washington-based publisher and current newspaper staff, alumni of the newspaper, distinguished journalists and military veterans from across the globe.
A historically significant Civil War site, Bloomfield is a small, close-knit community about 45 minutes southwest of Cape Girardeau by car. Both St. Louis and Memphis are a 2.5-hour drive away.

The starting salary is $35,000, and recent college graduates are encouraged to apply.
