Spring Storm Season in Southeast Missouri: How to Stay Safe & Prepared

Springtime in Southeast Missouri is a beautiful season, filled with blooming flowers, warmer days, and the return of outdoor activities. But along with the sunshine comes the reality that this time of year often brings volatile weather patterns, including severe thunderstorms, high winds, hail, and tornadoes.

Just a few weeks ago, communities across Southeast Missouri were reminded of the power of these spring storms. Several areas experienced damaging winds, large hail, and power outages as severe storms rolled through, leaving many residents scrambling for safety. These recent events are a clear reminder that preparation is key when it comes to spring weather.

The Sikeston Chamber wants to help keep all our Southeast Missouri neighbors safe and informed. Below, we've put together essential tips on how to prepare before, during, and after severe weather strikes.

Before the Storm: Prepare Early

  1. Create an Emergency Plan:
Make sure everyone in your household knows where to go and what to do in the event of a tornado or severe storm. Identify the safest spot in your home — ideally a basement or interior room without windows on the lowest floor.

  2. Build an Emergency Kit:
Include essentials like bottled water, non-perishable food, flashlights, extra batteries, a weather radio, first-aid supplies, and necessary medications.

  3. Stay Informed:
Sign up for local weather alerts through apps, radio, or local news. Consider purchasing a NOAA weather radio for real-time updates, even if cell service goes down.

  4. Secure Outdoor Items:
Bring in patio furniture, trash cans, and any loose objects that could become projectiles in high winds.

During the Storm: Stay Safe

  1. Tornado Safety:

    • If a tornado warning is issued, immediately seek shelter in your designated safe space.

    • Avoid windows, doors, and outside walls.

    • Protect your head and neck—use pillows, mattresses, or sturdy furniture for cover.

    • If you're driving and can't find shelter, do NOT attempt to outrun a tornado. Instead, safely exit your vehicle and lie flat in a low-lying area, covering your head.

  2. During Severe Thunderstorms:

    • Stay indoors and away from windows.

    • Unplug electronics to prevent damage from lightning strikes.

    • Avoid using plumbing fixtures during lightning storms.

After the Storm: Stay Cautious

  1. Watch for Downed Power Lines:
Never approach or attempt to move downed wires—assume they're live and report them immediately.

  2. Check for Gas Leaks & Structural Damage:
If you smell gas or suspect damage to your home, evacuate and contact emergency services.

  3. Be Patient:
Power restoration and cleanup efforts take time. Keep emergency supplies handy until utilities are restored.
