2024 Citizen of the Year - John McHaffie
What does it take to be named Citizen of the Year? It’s about making an undeniable impact on our community that brings people together and inspires others to do the same. This year’s recipient, John McHaffie, embodies these qualities. From rallying the city after disaster struck to hosting events that bring hope and joy, John deserves the title, 2024 Citizen of the Year.
John McHaffie may not seek the spotlight, but his actions speak volumes. In the wake of the tornado that hit Sikeston in May 2024, John stepped up. Under his leadership, Sikeston First Assembly of God became a hub for support, providing over 1500 meals to first responders and disaster victims. He didn’t stop there—John was instrumental in organizing the Trailer Brigade, an incredible community effort that saw over 100 people with more than a dozen trailers clearing over 75 loads of storm debris. This event wasn’t just about cleanup—it was a shining example of how individuals, churches, businesses, and organizations in Sikeston can come together to support one another.
But John’s contributions to our community extend far beyond disaster response. Throughout the year, he organizes events to distribute supplies to those in need and serves as a chaplain for Sikeston DPS, offering care and guidance to first responders and the community alike. His church also hosts the annual Light Up Sikeston with the Hope of Jesus Christmas light display. This event, like the Trailer Brigade, brings together a wide range of people and organizations to create something special for the community.
John’s humility is evident in all that he does. He’s the first to credit others and downplay his own role in these efforts, which only makes him more deserving of this recognition. His quiet, steadfast leadership and unwavering commitment to helping others have made a lasting impact on Sikeston.
Please join us in congratulating John McHaffie, the 2024 Citizen of the Year. Thank you, John, for showing us all the power of service, compassion, and community spirit!
